Putter Fitting

The loft and lie angle boards (pictured) will show us if you have the correct length putter that has the correct lie, loft and of course length. All checks are best tested using video analysis this gives the most accurate results. Everybody responds to different subtleties within their own putting game, it is important for you to work out the best combination that suits your game.

Putter fitting is equally important as any type of club fitting, lie loft and length all affect your putting, feel and control of the putt. Most putters have around 4 degrees of loft and it is important for you to get the putter face square at the point of impact in the putting stroke. The following elements fitted will make putting for you a lot easier.

Loft

Around 4 degrees is average and is required to lift the ball out of a depression it has created sitting the grass putting surface.

Too Much Loft

Correct Loft

De Lofted

Lie

Lie is important to have square as if your putter is incorrect it will be aiming left or right, requiring you to make a compensation in the stroke and creating inconsistencies.

Upright – the putter face will be aiming left.

Flat – the putter face will be aiming right.

Too Short

Correct

Too Long

Length

Correct length will enable you to have the correct lie angle, have freedom of movement for your arms to work back and through in the stroke and stand comfortably.

Weight

The weight of a putter does affect the feel of your stroke, imagine a super light putter (feather weight) and trying to hit a long 50 foot putt. Then imagine a heavy putter maybe solid steel hitting the same 50 foot putt, the heavier putter will be easier to get the ball to the hole. Therefore it is important to find a putter with a comfortable weight for you, not too heavy or too light, both long and short putts should be comfortable in stroking the putter and getting the ball to the hole.

Mallet

The type of putter will be a personal selection of what looks feels and is comfortable for you personally. A putter does not have to be expensive and the so called latest in technology to be the best putter for you.

These different elements do not suit everyone, there will be a putter style to suit the way you putt, and it could be the shape or the lining up system. Different things we use to line up a putter include the 2 ball system, lines on the putter, the face or maybe a single dot.

The the main types of putters are pictured on the left.

Other components affect the putter will be the shaft type, these include:

•  Goose Neck

•  Centre Shaft

•  Straight Shaft

•  Heel (Blade Putter Pictured)

•  Long Neck (Ping Answer Pictured)
